  • A New Development in Reverse Perspective

The Newest Perspective, debuts an exciting, new development in Hughes’ continuous exploration of visual perspective: Solid Hollows. These sculptural, three-dimensional paintings on perpendicular wood panels defy the limits of visual perception and surpass the intrigue of his iconic oil on board constructions. With a singular subject at their core, these recent compositions challenge our sense of reality and evoke a mysterious sense of movement as they appear to morph and shift before our eyes.

  • REVERSPECTIVE

“The magic of the reverspectives is that I have managed to create an art that comes alive. Each plane of the picture shrinks or expands to accommodate the movement of the onlooker, in perfect harmony, like a good dance partner.”

Hughes has achieved world renown for his reverse perspective, three-dimensional artworks that straddle the boundaries between painting and sculpture and challenge our perception of depth and space. He cleverly plays with the concept of perspective by using three-dimensional reliefs that project outward, yet they appear to recede into the distance when viewed from certain angles. As viewers move around the pieces, the apparent depth shifts, creating a mesmerizing illusion of space moving in opposition to their movement.

This illusion happens through the reversing the position of the vanishing point, where the most distant part of the artwork is constructed physically nearer but perceived as appearing further away, and vice versa. Hughes' mastery of this optical illusion invites us to reconsider the boundaries of visual perception, challenging the brain's natural assumptions about space and distance.

Patrick Hughes’ deep admiration for the city of Venice is evident in many of his works, where its waterways, bridges, and enchanting architecture become central themes. The city's unique spatial layout, which has inspired artists for centuries, specifically resonates with Hughes' interest in perspective manipulation.

One of his key influences is the 18th-century Venetian artist Canaletto, who was a master of capturing Venice’s grandeur through precise use of linear perspective in his detailed cityscapes. Canaletto’s ability to depict architectural depth and proportion with mathematical precision left a lasting impact on Hughes, whose own reverspective works echo this fascination with space and perspective. In Hughes’ interpretations, Venice’s iconic scenes become ever-shifting, illusionary environments, blending his love for the city with his passion for defying the rules of visual perception.

    A New Hand-Painted Multiple

Hughes’works often feature vibrant, colorful imagery, ranging from cityscapes and architectural forms to abstract patterns, which further enhance the surreal and dynamic nature of the viewing experience. They open up a playful dialogue between the real and the imagined, the tangible and the illusory, drawing viewers into a constantly shifting world of visual possibilities.

    Scott Richards and Patrick Hughes

“I hope experiencing my work it’s an experience unlike any other, in which viewers see the impossible happen. And I hope that they then think a bit about why that is. If lookers and see-ers experience the paradox and reciprocity of the world and themselves, they get a sense of the flow of life.”
