MICHAEL REAFSNYDER creates paintings that continually unfold, offering moments of surprise and sensual seduction-their delightful spontaneity conveying both the artist's energetic joy of making and the viewer's thrill of seeing.

Each is painting a celebration of the boundless pleasure of being alive.

The Southern California painter creates his exuberant compositions using palette knives, his own hands, and found objects—intentionally avoiding brushes to heighten a sense of raw, physical immediacy. Thick, lush, mixes of vividly tinted acrylic paint glide and gather across his canvasses in robust and unexpected color combinations.

    PAINT WAVE

PAINT WAVE, the largest painting in the exhibition, continues the artist's engagement with grisaille painting and its potential in abstraction. Grisaille is a technique in which a palette of greys is utilized as the foundation. The term grisaille stems from the French word for grey: gris. These greys are modulated into warm and cool tones through the addition of select colors. Traditionally, grisaille served as either an underpainting on which colored glazes where delicately placed, or as a complete painting without the glazes.
  • “Completing a painting in a single sitting allows risk to enter into the process. Things can go wrong quickly, but, when all comes together, they can take on a palpable energy and immediacy in the completed work.”

  • "Powered by whimsical joy and playful humor, each canvas is a unique event where liquid color smears, slippery material smushes, and wet paint glops. A carefree openness is fully synchronized with a razor-sharp awareness of how to move, react, and navigate into uncharted territory. Every painting is an energetic adventure, and the viewer is an active participant gazing at delightful spectacles and peering into supercharged experiences.".
