Eric Zammitt, Tall candy wedge, laminated Plexiglas, 2008 34.5 x 15.5 x 1.5 inches

San Francisco, February 7, 2007 – Eric Zammitt, a Los Angeles-based artist, will present a new body of work at Scott Richards Contemporary Art in San Francisco. Entitled Acrylic Constructions, Zammitt’s exhibition explores the metaphorical fusion of physical and spiritual energy. Each piece is a complex combination of optical geometric patterns that seem to vibrate with wave-like energy, recalling the random sequential patterns found in music, light and space, quantum and string theories, weaving, genetics and biological structures.

Arranging colors and patterns intuitively, Zammitt utilizes the refractive qualities of light on shiny Plexiglas to create elaborate mosaic-like works composed of thousands tiny square pieces of colored plastic, along with seductively translucent sculptures. His mesmerizing geometric abstractions emerge from a labor intensive process of layering and laminating stacks of different colored sheets of plastic that are spliced into ¼ inch wide strips and fused together through wet-sanding and polishing.  Smooth as glass, the resulting surfaces are an array of intricate rhythms and pulsating colors that shift and shimmer as they instantly captivate our attention.

Eric Zammitt was born in 1960 in Los Angeles, California, where he currently lives and works. He studied art at Pasadena City College and California State University in Los Angeles. Well-known in Southern California, Zammitt has also exhibited at international art fairs such as the Los Angeles Art Show, Art Miami and Palm Beach 3. In 2007, Zammitt’s Plexiglas abstractions were a part of Themes and Variations: New Abstraction in Los Angeles, at the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, California. This is his first solo exhibition at Scott Richards Contemporary Art.
