Scott Richards Contemporary Art proudly presents SUPERSPECTIVISION, featuring new paintings by celebrated British painter Patrick Hughes. Hughes’ unique three-dimensional painting constructions confuse viewers’ perceptions with their dizzying sense of paradoxical motion. The exhibition at Scott Richards Contemporary Art, 251 Post Street, Suite 310, San Francisco, opens with a gallery reception in honor of the artist on Thursday, October 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and continues on view through November 19, 2008. Patrick Hughes’ entertaining, disorienting and engaging works have quickly gained popularity among important collectors of contemporary art. At first glance his paintings appear flat, yet they jut out from the wall in a series of symmetrical reverse structures that make them appear to “move” as the viewer changes position, creating an argument between vision and perception.
Hughes’ recent paintings combine vivid colors with clever cut-in shapes and stark linearities, while expounding on the concept of reverse perspective. Illustrating works by well-known contemporary masters, the paintings give homage to the elegant lines of works by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson, and Victor Vasarely. In general, Hughes’ works allude to Surrealism, Pop Art, and Conceptualism, but are most distinguished by their own engaging qualities.
Patrick Hughes was born in 1939 in Birmingham, UK, and currently lives and works in London. Widely recognized as one of the major painters of contemporary British art, he is also a philosopher and a published writer. His works have been acquired for many public collections, including the British Library and Tate Gallery, London; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; Deutsche Bibliothek, Frankfurt; and Denver Art Museum. In addition to San Francisco, Hughes has exhibited his work in London, Seoul, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and other cities. Books by Patrick Hughes include Upon the Pun: Dual Meaning in Words and Pictures; More on Oxymoron; and The Paradox Box: Optical Illusions Puzzling Pictures Verbal Diversions. The most recent monograph on Hughes’ work is Perverspective, by John Slyce.
