Scott Richards Contemporary Art is proud to announce Shadow and Light, the solo exhibition of recent paintings by Warner Friedman. The exhibition opens on Thursday, March 1, 2007 with a reception for the artist and continues through March 31.

Warner Friedman's precise renderings of architectural details as portals to the outdoors astound the viewer with their intricate plays of shadow and light. His serene landscapes and atmospheric environments masterfully combine illusion with reality, appearing larger than life, as they seem to project beyond the surface of the wall and into another dimension. Working with irregularly shaped canvases, the artist carefully constructs every angle of his compositions, from the askew surfaces to the accentuated three-dimensional perspective that deftly captures a sliver of nature as seen through stationary architectural elements.  His paintings always start with elaborate preparation as Friedman initially makes a model of the architectural object to study in a particular light, and a perspective drawing to determine the shape of the canvas and planes therein. Drawing inspiration from the Cape Cod beaches, the rocky shores and tranquil farmlands and more recently, the Zen-like austerity of Eastern interiors, Friedman then carefully chooses a landscape that precisely reflects the same light as the constructed model and sets upon painting it in minute detail as reflected through the contrasting plays of shadow and light cast by the chosen architectural detail.

Warner Friedman lives in Sheffield, Massachusetts, a town whose quaint charm provides a constant source of inspiration. He has been widely exhibited throughout the United States, most notably at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, Connecticut, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, the Fort Lauderdale and the Boca Raton Art Museums in Florida.
