Carlos Cruz-Diez

Project Description

Although all Op Art artists address the illusion of movement through the interaction of color, Carlos Cruz-Diez takes it a step further: he builds a three-dimensional kinetic aspect into his complex, mixed media color compositions with metal, plastic and other materials. The viewer is able to interact with the works on different levels via both the literal and perceptual sense of movement within each piece. In the artist’s words, he encourages “an awareness of the instability of reality.”

Active since the early 1960s, Cruz-Diez is one of the most important Latin American artists working today. Born in Venezuela, he has lived and worked in Paris, France for most of his career, and has been influential to a younger group of Latin American artists working in the optical-kinetic style. His work is held in many prestigious collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Tate Modern, London, UK; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany; and the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX. BIO
